Your Computer’s Been Stolen!
Oh no! Well, we certainly don’t hope this ever happens. But if it does, at least you’ve prepared ourselves the best you can. Now what’s your next step?
As soon as you discover that your laptop has gone missing, you should report the theft to the authorities. Then, log onto www.whostolemypc.com and click My Account. Locate the computer on the list and click Manage.
The following commands can be added:
- IP Logging Periodically log the machine’s IP address and transmit the log to your FTP site.
- Record Screen Contents Periodically record the screen contents and transmit the pictures to your FTP site.
- Key Logging Record all keyboard input and transmit the log to your FTP site.
- URL Logging Record the URLs of visited websites and transmit the log to your FTP site.
- E-Mail Logging Record incoming e-mail messages and transmit them to your FTP site.
- Change FTP Information Change information about your FTP site.
- Transmit Files Transmit specified files to your FTP site.
- Delete Files Securely delete specified files from the computer.
- Purge E-Mail Securely remove all e-mail messages from the computer.
- Execute Application Execute a specified application at a certain time.
- Format Hard Drive Format a specified hard drive at a certain time.
- Simulate a Hardware Failure Simulate a hardware failure at a time and/or interval.
- Change System Password Change the Windows password.
- Shutdown the Computer Shutdown or restart the computer at a time and/or interval.
- Display a Custom Message Display a specified message at a time and/or interval.
Within a few hours of communicating with the server, your computer should start relaying information to you. The thief may avoid using the Internet with your computer, for fear that WhoStoleMyPC will spring into action. But as mentioned on the previous page, the computer will shift into Watchdog Mode and execute the commands you specified before it was stolen.
Although our discussion describes assigning commands after the computer’s been stolen, you are welcome to specify these commands ahead of time.
